VIDEO: Liverpool Lose Out in Miami

It started off on a familiar note, but ended on one we haven’t become accustomed to, when Liverpool lost out 3-1 to Premier League rivals Manchester United in the final of the Guinness International Champions Cup in Miami.

A clumsy challenge from United defender Phil Jones sliced down Raheem Sterling in the area after the youngster found his way onto the end of a neat ball from Glen Johnson and the referee had no hesitation pointing to the spot. In typical Steven Gerrard fashion, the Reds skippers finished past a stranded David De Gea to give the travelling Kop something to cheer.

With a series of massive clearances from Mamadou Sakho buoying the defense, the Liverpool back line was lulled into a sense of complacency, and as we saw so many times last season, they were made to pay for it when both Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata found the back of the net in quick succession to put Louis van Gaal’s side into the drivers seat.

With a number of notable absences seeing the Reds struggle to get something going as the clock ticked down, Manchester United youngster Jesse Lingard would put the result out of question when he fired home a swerving shot that beat Simon Mignolet and confined the Anfield outfit to leaving America without a meaningless, pre-season trophy.

Thems the breaks.
