Aubameyang Rules Out Klopp Reunion, Puel Dismisses “Speculation” Around Sakho Move
If a hack is looking for a story, there’s no easier piece to write than one linking Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp with a move for one of his old charges at Borussia Dortmund. While the Reds interest in American youngster Christian Pulisic is well known, it’s highly unlikely the Anfield outfit will be making a move for anyone else — least of all star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang even though Gabon international has admitted that his time in Germany may be drawing to a close.
“I love it at Dortmund, but I can’t say that I’ll stay for two more years, or five or 10. It’s possible that a club could reach an agreement with Dortmund in June and I’ll go,” explained the 27-year old, who has already made his preference of playing for one of Spain’s big two well known. “If Real want me, they will call me one day and, if not, no problem. I live my life and am optimistic about the future,” added Aubameyang before putting to bed rumours of a move to Merseyside and a reunion with Klopp. “I don’t think that’ll happen.”
And, in a similar vein, Southampton boss Claude Puel gave pretty much the same response when asked about rumours linking the Saints with an interest in Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho. With club captain Jose Fonte looking to leave St. Mary’s, Puel reportedly tried to sign Sakho on loan until the end of the season, but was rebuffed. The Frenchman is free to leave Anfield in January, but the Reds are reportedly looking for a permanent move and a payday in the region of £20mil for the 26-year old.
“I know this player but I know nothing about this, it’s speculation,” said the Saints boss when asked about Sakho. “We have a reflection about this possibility to see another centre-back if Jose Fonte left,” continued Puel, hinting that they’ll explore their options. “For the moment it’s not the situation, and perhaps we will stay with the same squad, with good opportunities for Jack Stephens or Gardos.”
