Liverpool are a “Step Ahead” of Clubs Chasing Memphis Depay Signature

Just one step ahead?

The transfer window isn’t even close to being open yet, but the rumour mill has been humming along nicely with PSV Eindhoven sporting director Marcel Brands unable to shut-up about the future of their highly coveted youngster Memphis Depay.

While Liverpool will certainly face some challenges trying to attract top level talent this summer with the likelihood of securing Champions League football low, but Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that they’ll be looking to make a splash when the window opens on July 1st. If marquee players is what the Northern Irishman wants, he’d do much worse than to take a punt on Depay who has said on more than one occasion that a big money move away from the Eredivisie champions is exactly what he’s looking for.

Although it’ll be a blow to the Dutch club to have such a talented player head for the exit door, Brands hasn’t been shy about drumming up interest in the 21-year old as they look to get as much for him as they possibly can. “PSG and Liverpool are indeed a step ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Memphis. United have only informed us about their interest,” the PSV sporting director is quoted as saying. The list of interested clubs has grown in recent weeks. But Bayern Munich are not among the teams that want to sign him.”

Rodgers, when asked about Liverpool’s reported interest in Depay, refused to confirm or deny that the Anfield outfit had indeed held talks with the reigning Dutch champions, but that hasn’t stopped the mill from churning. “It’s only logical that there is a lot of movement around Memphis. He is still a young player, but is already hugely efficient. He should be proud of that. There isn’t usually a lot of movement in the transfer market at this stage of the season,” continued Brands. “It’s an exception that so many clubs have already shown an interest in Memphis. That only illustrates that he’s on the right track.”
