Liverpool Await Results of Adam Lallana Scan
After missing a glorious chance to claw Liverpool back on equal terms just before the half-time break, one wouldn’t have been too surprised if Adam Lallana’s departure during the interval came as a result of just that.
By the time his replacement was dismissed — less than a minute after the restart — we had learned that wasn’t the case at all and that the 26-year old, who was due to meet up with the injury hit England squad later today, had actually picked up a groin injury during a largely ineffective opening 45-minutes. Juan Mata found his second just before the hour mark, and though Daniel Sturridge beat Manchester United ‘keeper David de Gea at the near post to give the hosts hope, the opportunity to leap-frog their rivals into fourth place was well and truly wasted by the Anfield outfit.
While it’s certainly not over until it’s over, things just got a little bit tougher. With Steven Gerrard set to serve a ban for his stamp on Ander Herrera and Martin Skrtel possibly facing retrospective action from the Football Association for an ugly coming together with de Gea in the final seconds, an injury to Lallana is the last thing that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers needs.
The former Southampton skipper, who is also set to add to Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson’s worries when he inevitably withdraws from international duty, is expected to have a full scan later on today. Although it’s still too early to say for certain, the 26-year old is expected to be out for at least two weeks, meaning he’ll almost certainly miss the now crucial showdown with Arsenal at the beginning of April, the midweek FA Cup replay with Blackburn Rovers that follows it and the visit of Newcastle United the following Monday.
