Daniel Agger’s Future is “Complicated”

With the transfer window closing down, the future of Liverpool defender Daniel Agger is still up in the air with the great Dane confirming that things are “complicated” on Merseyside at the moment.

The £20mil signing of Dejan Lovren from Southampton last month has only moved to muddy the waters further with the Croatian center-half partnering Martin Skrtel in the heart of the Reds defence for the opening two matches of the season. With Mamadou Sakho apparently third choice and Kolo Toure set to stay as emergency cover, Agger’s future at Anfield remains uncertain even though Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has repeatedly insisted that his vice-captain is not only not on the market, but he’s not for sale at all.

“The future is complicated,” explained the 29-year old to Jyllands-Posten. “There are a few things that have to be sorted and we have to take it from there. I actually don’t know what will happen. It is a bit up to Liverpool. I have had niggling injuries at the wrong times and I have to say that it is difficult to change the team when it is winning.”

Premier League rivals Arsenal, who sold Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona last month, are believed to have a keen interest in taking the experienced defender to the Emirates Stadium, but the Reds would likely block that move to avoid strengthening a direct rival. Danish side Brondby have also said they’d go “a long way” to bring Agger back to the club he left for Liverpool all those years ago, but they may not have the financial might to do so. A loan deal could very well be in the works if a permanent move can’t be sorted out by the time the transfer window closes. Regardless, it sounds like he wants this resolved post-haste.

“I am not frustrated by that” he said of his multiple injuries making it hard to get back into the side. “I am frustrated the way it happened and the way it was handled.”
