Agger and Sakho Making Progress
The shaky partnership of Kolo Toure and Martin Skrtel will be tested in a big way this weekend when Arsenal visit Anfield, but with another meeting with the Gunners – this time in the FA Cup – on the horizon, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that both Daniel Agger and Mamadou Sakho are on the mend.
Although neither will be ready for this Saturday’s meeting with the table topping North London side, both center halves are expected to return from injury in the very near future, with the Great Dane set to return to full training next week with a view to coming back to the land of the fit and healthy for next weekend’s trip to the Emirates Stadium.
“Daniel and Mamadou are not far off but I’m not expecting to have either of them back for the weekend” Rodgers told the Liverpool ECHO in the buildup to this weekend’s meeting with Arsene Wengers side. “They are not back in full training yet. Daniel will be back at some stage next week so he’s progressing really well, but Sakho is still a bit away from coming back training.”
Agger, injury prone as ever, has been out with a calf injury since Liverpool dispatched Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup at the beginning of January, while Sakho has been sidelined with a hamstring problem since the 2-1 loss to Chelsea at the end of December. Kolo Toure and Martin Skrtel have been performing admirably since then, but the Ivorian showed why he remains quite a ways down the Anfield pecking order when a terrible pass across the face of goal handed West Bromwich Albion a share of the spoils last weekend.
While the experienced defender is fully expected to bounce back from the mistake, no one would be too upset to see some fresh blood come back into the side.
