Liverpool to Return to America This Summer
Good news North American Liverpool fans – the Reds are coming back to town. Today, the club confirmed that they will be taking part in the Guinness International Champions Cup along with a number of the world’s top sides.
The Anfield outfit will see some familiar faces with Italian clubs AC Milan, Inter Milan and AS Roma, fellow English clubs Manchester City and Manchester United, Greek powerhouses Olympiacos and Spanish outfit Real Madrid making up the eight-team tournament. The sides will be split into two groups and each team will play three matches before the teams that top their groups meet in the final at Sun Life Stadium in Miami on Monday, August 4.
“We were last in the USA in 2012 and thoroughly enjoyed our visit, so we are delighted to be invited to take part in the Guinness International Champions Cup and revisit again this year” said Billy Hogan, the Reds chief commercial officer. “This will be the club’s seventh visit to North America, where we know we have a huge fan base, and being part of this tournament will allow us to bring the club closer to those supporters and engage with them once again.”
Although exact venue locations for Liverpool haven’t been confirmed as of yet, the tournament will take place at various venues across the United States with Phoenix, Denver, D.C., Charlotte, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Chicago, New York/ New Jersey and two yet to be named cities hosting the festivities. The Reds will make Boston, home of principal owners Fenway Sports Group, their home base and train at the Harvard University sports facility.
