He’s never made any secret of it; Luis Suarez wants Champions League football. Speaking with the clubs official site ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Aston Villa at Anfield this weekend, the Reds striker re-iterated his desire to play on Europe’s biggest and brightest stage – his reason for wanting to leave Merseyside during the summer.
Though his intention has remained the same, his tone has changed and with the club sitting in fourth place going into the weekend, he now believes that his fellow teammates have shown that they’re good enough to lift Liverpool back up where they belong. “We know that in the last two years we haven’t demonstrated that Liverpool can play in the Champions League,” said the Uruguayan. “Now we are playing very well and we have the level to play in the Champions League. We have really good players and if we continue at this level, we can do it.”
Suarez, who has scored an astounding 22 goals since returning from a 10 match ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic, has played a major role in the clubs about-face and, amid fears that he still could very well leave Anfield in the coming transfer window, has signed a new long term contract with the club – a major show of commitment to both the club and manager Brendan Rodgers after the turbulence of the summer.
Still, the fact of the matter is that if Liverpool doesn’t qualify for the Champions League this season, the man from Salto, Uruguay could very well be off in the summer, but for now anyways, he remains very much focused on the task at hand – success with the Reds. “When you are a child, you imagine a lot. Now many people or players speak about that and it’s unbelievable for me. It is also for Liverpool, because in the last two or three years we have not played very well and not demonstrated our level” said the striker with a renewed sense of conviction. “Now we are back to that.”
